Varanasi, May 4, 2025 :Revered yoga guru Swami Shivanand Baba, believed to be 128 years old, passed away late last night in Varanasi. The centenarian spiritual leader had been admitted to the BHU hospital for the past three days due to breathing complications.
A lifelong practitioner of yoga and sadhana, Swami Shivanand Baba was awarded the Padma Shri in 2022 for his service to society through yoga. Known for his simplicity, discipline, and devotion, Baba had millions of followers across India and abroad. He had also actively participated in the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, making a public appearance that inspired many by his vitality and spiritual presence even at his advanced age.
His mortal remains have been placed at his Durgakund ashram in Varanasi for followers to pay their final respects. The last rites will be performed on Monday, with many expected to gather to honor the yoga icon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute, stating:
“I am deeply saddened by the demise of Shivanand Baba Ji, a yoga practitioner and resident of Kashi. His life dedicated to yoga and sadhana will continue to inspire every generation of the country. He was also awarded Padma Shri for serving the society through yoga.”
“The departure of Shivanand Baba to Shivalok is an irreparable loss for all of us Kashi residents and millions of people who took inspiration from him. I pay my tribute to him in this hour of grief.”
Swami Shivanand Baba leaves behind a legacy of spiritual discipline, humility, and unwavering service to humanity. His teachings will continue to guide seekers for generations to come.
